I know. I’ve been there.
And…it’s ok.
It’s ok to be tired, frustrated or even angry as a Security Leader. You might even say it goes with the territory.
The key thing about feeling that way is what you do with it.
You might try and ignore it. But then something else pops into your inbox, or across your desk…or someone knocks at your door. And eventually, it’s back to the willpower thing. It will only work for so long.
Or, you might try and get it out in private. So maybe you shout it out in the car, or maybe you burn it out at the gym, forcing yourself to exhaustion burning through an extra 10 min.
And sometimes this is enough. You get through it, your mind is reset, and you’re ready to fight another day.
And other times, it isn’t.
So what do you do?
You might end up taking it out on the next person that walks up and says, “Hi.” Or you might take it out on your team, or you might even take it home and your family chalks it up to “just another tough day at the office.”
As a leader, you don’t really have that many options. If you’re worried, sharing it with the team is going to impact the morale. And anyone in your direct circle of friends, colleagues and family will do their best to try and help, but they probably won’t really “get it” because they haven’t been in your shoes.
That’s when it can be good to have someone who doesn’t “have a horse in the race,” as they say. Someone who has been there, has the experience and has the perspective to help you decide if what you’re feeling really is just lack of sleep or stress overload, or if there’s a tangible problem that can be solved. And if solving that problem can really give you a break.
Helping security leaders get through “one of those days” with objectivity and lack of judgement is just one of the benefits you get as part of our Security Leadership coaching program.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated and even angry at the situation you’re in and you have the determination to fix it, you don’t have to do it alone.
